Permanent Orienteering Courses

What is a Permanent Course?

Permanent orienteering courses have a series of fixed posts or plaques for you to find with the aid of an orienteering map.
You can normally download this map, or grab one from the land owner in advance.

Access to permanent orienteering courses

There are a number of permanent orienteering courses around the country which are ideal for use by schools, scouts and family groups. These courses are maintained by various organisations e.g. Coillte, OPW, or County Councils.

Some venues provide a free orienteering map to download, while in other cases the map is available at the venue. If in doubt contact the venue directly. We advise a site visit prior to travelling with large groups to ensure that the course has not been adjusted by the venue owner.

Legend:

  • Black = Virtual Course;
  • Blue = Permanent Course;
  • Red = Virtual (without app) and MapRunF (with app).

Some landowners actively update their Permanent Course maps to reflect changes as they occur. Use the links below to find out more.

Safety and Disclaimer

Please note that you undertake these courses at your own risk. DIY courses are not manned. While most courses are in lower-risk public locations such as parks, some take place on open mountainside in remote terrain. It is your responsibility to ensure you are properly equipped and carry safety equipment appropriate to the location.

Be aware that not all areas have phone coverage. Leave details of your plans with a family member or friend. If in doubt to your abilities, start with a lower-risk location and/or attend an organised event.

Availability of a map does not give you right to trespass on private property. You must gain permission of the landowner.

Download of maps is deemed acceptance of these conditions.
