Why am I getting an “Application Blocked by Java Security” error when I try to run Ór?

In order to try to cut down on malware, newer versions of Java are more fussy about what applications can be run.  In order to be able to run Ór, you will need to add orienteering.ie to your exceptions list.  You can do this for MS Windows by following the following instructions:

1. For Windows, use the Start -> Java -> Configure Java menu to bring up the Java Configuration dialog.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Click ‘Edit Site List’.
4. Click Add.
5. Type https://orienteering.ie into the new line and press Enter.  It is important that you type it exactly as presented here.
6. Repeat for https://www.orienteering.ie
7. Your exception list should look like the following (assuming you don’t have any other exceptions)
   
8. Click OK
9. Click OK
10. You should now be able to run Ór.

Why will Ór not show my Download Station when my computer is not connected to the internet?

There was a problem with version 1.7 of Java.  You should update your Java install.

How can I get Traces from Ór?

You must first enable the Java console.

1. Using the Windows Start menu, click on Java → Configure Java to start the Java Control Panel.
2. Click the Advanced tab.
3. Click Java Console and select Show console.
4. Click OK.

Download and copy log4j.properties into your Ór database folder. You can find the database folder using the Help → About Ór menu.

When you restart Ór, the Java Console will be displayed and traces will appear in it.

How do I uninstall Ór?

Uninstalling Ór is usually quite simple but it may involve a bit of hunting.

1. Do this in Windows, using the Start → Control Panel menu.
2. Open the Java Control Panel.
3. Click the View… button in the Temporary Internet Files section.
4. Ór should be listed among the Webstart applications.
5. Select Ór and click Remove Selected Application.
6. Select “Deleted Applications” from the dropdown.
7. Select Ór and click Remove Selected Application.
8. Ór is now uninstalled.

r will not start unless I am connected to the Internet

This has happened to some people recently (2010) and I am at a loss as to why. I can only conclude that it is a bug in Java. I suggest trying the following:

1. Start Ór twice or three times while connected to the internet. Then try when not connected. This has had an effect in the past
2. Uninstall Ór (see above) and re-installing it.

If that does not fix your problem then you should still be able to start Ór in the field by:

1. se the Windows Start → Settings → Control Panel menu.
2. Double-click Java.
3. The Java Control Panel will appear.
4. Click the ‘View…’ button on the General tab. The Java Cache Viewer will appear (eventually).
5. Select ‘Show Applications’ on the top left.
6. Right-click Ór and select ‘Run Offline’.
7. Ór should start.

How do I start the Java Webstart Viewer?

1. On the Start menu, there is an item called Run... Click it. You will see a small dialogue with a title of Run
2. Type javaws -viewer (with older versions of Java, use javaws) into the dialogue and click OK. You should see the Java Webstart configuration dialogue. If javaws.exe cannot be found this way, you will have to find it manually, using Windows Explorer. It will be located in a directory called something like C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_09\bin. The part in italics may be different.

How can I use my own archive with Ór?

Using the in-built archive as a template, you can create your own archive file. You can find the archive file in the Ór database folder as a file called archive.csv. You can find the location of the database folder using the Help → About Ór menu.

The columns used by Ór are described below:

• Col 1: Database Id (not used but passed into the results file)
• Col 2: SI card (SI card number)
• Col 3: Surname
• Col 4: First name
• Col 9: City (Club name)
• Col 12: Short (Favourite Course)
• Col 17: Text1 (Class)

Note: If the First name is Rental Ór will assume the card is rented.

Once you have created your archive file there are three ways you can use it:

1. Overwrite the existing archive.csv file with your version. Once you restart Ór it will use the new file. Do not use the Internet → Get Archive menu or your archive will be overwritten.
2. If you have a website, you can save your archive there. Edit Or.csv in the Ór database. Change https://www.orienteering.ie/members/getarchive.php to the address of your archive. Once you restart Ór, you may now use the Internet → Get Archive menu to download your archive at any time.
3. The above methods only affect a single computer. You can have your own custom version of Ór for all your club computers by copying and editing the Ór configuration file, https://www.orienteering.ie/or/or.jnlp. Change the archive property to your archive address:<property name=“archive” value=“https://www.orienteering.ie/members/getarchive.php”/> Now upload or.jnlp to your website. You can now launch Ór from any computer using this file and the Internet → Get Archive menu will download your archive. NB. If running Ór on a computer that has previously run Ór from orienteering.ie, you will need to delete Or.csv from the Ór database folder.
