JWOC 2015 – Irish juniors off to flying start

The Junior World Orienteering Championships 2015 kicked off this morning (Sunday), with the Sprint Distance.

Ireland has sent a strong mixed team with:
W20: Aoife McCavana (GEN), Clíona McCullough (3ROC / DUO), Niamh Corbett (CorkO / UCDO) and Róisín Long (AJAX / UCDO)
M20: Jonathan Quinn (GEN / UCDO), Niall McCarthy (BOC / UCDO) and Paul Pruzina (LVO)

Åmot in Norway offered tricky terrain for the sprint distance, with lots of routechoice.

In the women’s class, Swiss runner Simona Aebersold won in a time of 13:56, Niamh Corbett placed in 60th, +3:20, the best women’s JWOC sprint result ever for Ireland!
Cliona Mccullough finished in 88th, +4:38, with Aoife McCavana in 110th, +5:59.

The Men’s race was won by Tim Robertson of New Zealand, the first man to ever retain the JWOC Sprint Gold medal, in a time of 14:31.
All of the Irish men ran well with Paul Pruzina finishing in 66th +2;30, Jonathan Quinn 72nd +2:46 and and Niall McCarthy 75th +2:49.
