Control Descriptions - a guide

To help you find the controls, you will get a list of control descriptions. These provide detail about the course and a description of each control location.

They are usually printed on the map but are also available on a separate sheet of paper.
Control descriptions use international symbols, so that orienteers can take part in competitions anywhere in the world.
For Beginner’s and Children’s courses the control descriptions use words rather than symbols.

The International Orienteering Federation has a full list of current symbols used internationally.

Control Codes: Each control is marked with a control code, this is used to confirm that you have found the correct one. The number on the control will correspond with the control code on your descriptions – if the numbers don’t match you aren’t at the right control.
