The last of the short Leinster series of MTBO events is this Sunday at Carrick Mountain, Glenealy, Co. Wicklow. Start times 11.00 to 12.00. There will be two courses of about 10km/350m climb and 13km/450m.

Travel directions as for the Leinster Championships in April but parking may not be in exactly the same place: Leave the N11/M11 at Exit 16 and travel to Rathnew, then to Glenealy. Turn right in Glenealy village and sharp left after about 100m at the GAA grounds. Please drive slowly up the minor road to the competition area and respect the residents.

The map will be A3, 1:10000 scale, as was used for LOC2016. Plastic bags will be available for maps if you need one. Sportident timing will be used. Pre-entry is not required, nor is club membership so if you know anyone who wants to try MTBO, encourage them to come along. It\'s a big area and great for MTBO and you could clearly see Wales from the upper parts of the mountain yesterday!

Safety: You must wear a helmet and you must stay with your bike at all times. Courses will close at 2 pm. There are a lot of MTB tracks in the area and not all of them may be marked. Please also be aware that walkers, horses, and (unfortunately) some scramblers and quad bikes also use the area. There may also be some non-orienteering mountain bikers.

Results and routegadget are now up on orienteering.ie. It would be really interesting for the planner and for the other competitors to see your routes, so please take a few minutes to put them on Routegadget.

A great day for orienteering - a pity that fewer than 20 lucky people took the opportunity for MTBO at Carrick. Well done to winner Alan Ayling and to W14 Caoimhe May who did the \"short\" course. Particular thanks to Mick Farrell, Marcus Geoghegan and Emma McAuley for taking in nearly all the controls afterwards.

What can we do to encourage orienteers and mountain bikers to try MTBO? It\'s a great combination. And what can we do to encourage Coillte to support it? It\'s ironic that the only real MTBO map in Wicklow couldn\'t be used because the organising club couldn\'t get a permit for the event. Thanks to CNOC and Ajax for the first two events in the series.

PS Check yourself for ticks afterwards!

A note on the economics of today\'s event: Income €155; expenses: Map printing €27.50, Coillte €50, travel €30, refreshments €10. Time: 3 days in the area plus the hours of thinking and weighing up possible courses; Result: satisfaction for planner and competitors alike! Just a pity that the turnout was so low.

If I could borrow/hire a bike I\'d give  it a go. Not going to shell out loads of  euro just to try it out.
