Our next event takes place at Curragh East, this coming Sunday 5th December. Start times available from 11am to 1am. Courses close at 3:00pm.

Location and Directions:

The location is here: Grid Reference N 79040 11687 - Google maps: https://www.google.ie/maps/@53.150714,-6.8188034,17z

Directions from M7.

Take Exit 13 from Southbound carriageway on the M7. At the roundabout, take the first exit, signposted Kilcullen & Athgarvan onto the R413.  Continue on R413 for 850ms to Lumville Cross Roads . Turn right onto L7042. Continue for 800ms and take the first right onto the access road for the Curragh Rugby Club. Turn right into their grounds. Parking is in the grounds of the rugby club.

Assembly and download are in the grounds of the rugby club and toilets are available in the club house. The Curragh Golf Club is marked on all maps as out of bounds. Use of any paths through the Golf Club is strictly prohibited for safety reasons.

Terrain:

The Curragh’s open, undulating grassland makes for fast, unimpeded running. Furze is the dominant flora with some distinct stands of trees. Not every bush or man/sheep made track is mapped and navigational care should be taken. The Yellow and Orange courses are predominantly flat and on grassy tracks. Depending on the weather on the days up to the event, they may be buggy friendly. Neither of these courses crosses a road.

Courses:

There are 2 starts.
Yellow, Orange and Red will start at the South Western corner of the car park.
Light Green, Short Green, Green, Blue and Brown will have a 1 km walk to their start. The route to the start will be signed.

If you need to hire an SI card, you can indicate this on the entry form - these will be pre-allocated, and can be collected at registration, to be returned at the finish. Lost cards cost €40 to replace! Registration will be used for collection of SI rentals and downloading of results.

Entries via the online system at https://www.orienteering.ie/fixtures/curragh-east-18/
Participants are limited to 200 - If you plan to bring a group, please contact us at cnoc@orienteering.ie ahead of time so that we can have maps and SI cards available to you promptly.

Results:

Results will be posted on https://www.orienteering.ie

Prices:

  • Adults  €8
  • Students, Juniors and those over 65 years €5
  • Family: 2 Adults and up to 5 Juniors €20

Whether you are a complete novice, a family, or a seasoned veteran, there is a course to suit. If you are new to orienteering, drop us an email beforehand, or ask us on the day (at the event) for advice. I'd suggest beginner children or families start on the Yellow course, and beginner adults could try the Red course - both are technically easy, the only difference being the length involved.

Dogs:

The Curragh is sheep country! While dogs are allowed, they must be kept on a leash.

Litter:

Please bring your waste home with you - do not expect the organisers to take it away for you!

Covid-19:

Please study the Irish Orienteering Association's Covid-19 guidelines (https://www.orienteering.ie/about-us/covid-19-return-to-orienteering/) carefully and pay special attention to the Participant Code of Conduct.

Hi David, on looking at the map I think it's exit 12 on the M7 not exit 13, thanks.

As you all realize, the Curragh event is the final event for the 20/21 Leinster League.

Prizes are expected to be as in 2018 and 2019.

Places are still up for deciding on most courses, and of course Planner, Controller, and Organiser points will need to be factored in after the event.  Points equal to their highest score will be allocated to planners, controllers and organisers.

On the Brown course it looks like 1st, 2nd, and 3rd is decided for Valdas Tilunas, Angus Tyner, and Killian Breenan

On the Blue course it's very tight between Brendan McCarthy and Dave Weston for 1st and 2nd. Paul Smyth should take 3rd but he could be caught by Brian Rowe.

Ruth Lynam will win the W with Martina Rowe 2nd

Hopefully I will win the Green when my planner points are added. 2nd and 3rd are between Tivon Tyner, Michael Beary, Donal Wickham, and Tommy Burke.

On the W side Deirdre Coyle will probably win if she runs as Heather will be away at the VHI. Clodagh O'Donnell will be 2nd

The light green is close between Cian Wickham and John deLacy for 1st and 2nd, and Conor Masterson and Eoin O'Donnell for 3rd.

For the Ws Niamh Browne should win if she runs, with Una Coughlan 2nd

The Red is between Cathleen Morrison and Gabrielle King provided they complete the course.

On the Orange Alfie Tyner is the only one who can win,

And the same on the Yellow, Conor O'Boyle is the only one with enough evets.

Enjoy, I will be away at the VHI.

You can throw Zoe into the mix for Blue. She has a counting result further down the list from Fauna and planner or controller points from either Setanta event and is running this Sunday.

There's probably similar for others, for example Hugh on Brown if he runs this Sunday, plus controller points.

Thanks O'Boyles & CNOC for a great event in beautiful sunshine yesterday. Having the shorter courses on their own less detailed area (and own dedicated map with legend) was brilliant. The finishing times on the Red indicate as much.

I'm still scratching my head about the early long leg on the Brown & Blue course (236 - 237). It looked clear to me which route to take but I'm seeing 3 different options taken by people on the Routegadget. I still think that keeping south of both out of bounds areas was shortest (although it involved a bit more climb). Anyone any ideas which is best?

Thanks again!

I couldn't attend the event myself (unfortunately as it is a Christmas tradition by now) but it looks like it was a success.

Re the 236-237 leg, The clockwise route looks the better one to me as it allows plenty of time on road to read the map ahead, at least in theory! (and i think i am now tech-aware enough to contribute a routegadget next time).
