| Summary | Mostly runnable forest with paths and tracks, with a steep, more complex rocky slope which will be used by the more difficult courses. There are many rootstocks/tree stumps in the area since the recent storms. However, these are NOT marked on the map as there are just too many to include. The rootstocks which were there before (green X's) have been removed from the map. Fallen trees in one, twos or threes are not shown on the map as you can get around them easily if you look ahead when planning micro route choices. There are some areas of heavy storm damage which will affect route choice as they are impenetrable. These are shown with a purple cross-hatch (like out-of-bounds areas) on the map. Some areas with light storm damage (typically deciduous forest with some fallen branches and some fallen trees) are shown as white forest with good visibility (vertical green lines on white forest). There is forestry work (thinning) going on in the forest and there are new extraction lines which are not shown on the map, particularly in the deciduous forest parts. |
| Notes |
Pre-entry at a reduced rate until Thursday 3rd April, limited entry on the day also, depending on available maps. Parking: Please note that parking close to assembly/start/finish/registration is limited, so please share transport as much as possible. Single-occupant cars may be asked to park elsewhere. There is some parking at the forest entrance, about 2 km walk to/from the assembly area. If you would like to share transport, there is a car park at the roundabout in the centre of Ashford village, and some parking is available across the road from Nun's Cross school. A one-way system will operate in the forest, with no entry after 12.30 and no exit before 12.30 as the approach road to parking is narrow, with very few passing places. Please don't bring a large vehicle (camper-van or bus) unless there is no alternative, and contact the organisers beforehand. The event will also feature the Irish Student Championships, being coordinated by Dublin University Orienteers. The two important things to remember are: Parking (limited, so car share) and storm damage/rootstocks. A portaloo will be available. The start is about 10 minutes walk, mostly level road, from Assembly.
