| Summary | This is an excellent orienteering area which has not been much used. It was used twice for Shamrock O-Ringins. It consists of open mountain, with steeper slopes lower down, and a wealth of contour detail and quite a lot of crags on the slopes. The map has been restored and updated for this event by Brian Corbett. Runnability is generally good. The grass is a bit longer than it would have been for those early summer Shamrocks, but it is still runnable and not very wet. There is almost no gorse and ferns on the courses. There are two starts.
Start for the Orange and Red Courses is, 1.5 km and 170m climb along a farm road. From here it is a further 600m and 150m climb, in the terrain, to the start for the remaining courses. The finish is the same for all courses.
While the climb to the start is significant, this should not discourage competitors as it gives access to excellent, technical terrain on the top of the hill, where the runnability is best, and keeps the climb on the courses down. |
