Notes

The Level 1 Basic Orienteering Instructor Training 2-day course will take place in Kinsale, Co. Cork on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th March 2025.

The course will be preceded by a 1 hour online (Zoom) session on Wednesday 26th February at 7pm to introduce ourselves, outline the course contents, share access to the online resources, and to delegate the activities that each individual will do on day 1.

The instructor training course is aimed at club orienteers, youth leaders and outdoor pursuits instructors, with basic knowledge of the sport, who are interested in introducing people to the sport of orienteering.

This course is certified by Sport Ireland Coaching.

Upon completion of the training course, candidates will be required to log teaching hours and complete a practical teaching assessment to qualify as an Orienteering Ireland Level 1 Orienteering Instructor.

Prerequisites

Candidates should have a basic knowledge of the sport, including some event experience. Ideally this should consist of a minimum of three public events on up to Light Green courses.

Course Overview

Trainee instructors will:

  • Be introduced to the Orienteering Skills Levels as a progressive scheme for developing orienteering skills in novice and beginner participants.
  • Plan and deliver sessions that introduce the basic understanding of an orienteering map, including map colours and commonly used symbols.
  • Explore a range of activities suitable for introducing orienteering in the classroom setting, school grounds and in local parks and woods.
  • Become familiar with equipment and skills necessary to organise orienteering activities.
  • Learn to carry out risk assessments for orienteering activities and how to use course planning tools for organising simple orienteering competitions in private grounds, parks and small woods.
  • Use course planning tools to organise simple orienteering activities in private grounds, parks and small woods.
