Summary | Forested mountain with a good network of paths and tracks and many unmarked mountainbike tracks. There has been some recent felling but this won't have a big effect on the courses. |
Notes |
Leinster League event with the normal range of courses from Yellow (easy) to Brown (Difficult). Carrick Mountain is a largely runnable forest, at its best in spring. There is a good network of paths and tracks and varied types of forest including beech, coniferous and even eucalyptus. There are many mountain bike tracks in the area, mostly not mapped. Two areas of crags and rocky ground on the top of the mountain are marked out-of-bounds for safety reasons, and one area of fields beside the forest is private land and is also marked out of bounds. There will be entry on the day with a higher entry fee so please enter in advance: it will save you money, give us a better idea of how many maps to print, and allow us to put you into the entry system before the event. Entries opened on March 11th and close on Thursday March 30th. Entry to the forest will be on the north west side, on the other side to Glenealy village. Parking will be on forest roads. Indicative course lengths are below and further information will be on the Orienteering Ireland Forum under "Events" here. SIAC contactless punching will be in use (a change from the earlier information). We will have portable toilets at assembly. Course Controls Length Climb Red 12 3,7 km 150 m Yellow 8 2,3 km 100 m Maps will be printed on A4 "Rite in the Rain" waterproof paper. The map is 1:10,000 scale with 5 metre contours, with minor updates in March 2023. Control descriptions will be printed on the maps and available separately at pre-start, in IOA symbols for Brown, Blue, Green and Light Green; in English for the Red, Orange and Yellow courses. Courses will close at 3 pm. Location of forest entrance: see OpenStreetMap here. Reminder: DO NOT approach the forest up the narrow road from Glenealy village. From Dublin, leave the M11 at Junction 16; turn right in Rathnew and pass through Glenealy on the Travel through Glenealy on the R752 towards Rathdrum. About 2 km after Glenealy take a sharp right onto the L2116 just before the railway bridge and follow signs for about 3.4 km to the forest entrance. Drive up to 3 km in the forest to parking. |
