As people are carrying cash less and less, these SumUp wireless credit card readers look like they may be a good idea for orienteering events.  The website says no monthly charge and a reasonable commission.  The models in the links below don't need to be paired with a phone so it should be possible just to pass the units from one organiser to the next, along with the SI gear.

Has anyone any experience of them?

As far as I can see most clubs in Leinster have been using SumUp for a few years now, I don't know about elsewhere. It works great as long as you have mobile coverage. But most events are online pre-entry nowadays so it is less significant than before, but it still has its place. Biggest hassle is getting it associated with the correct bank account but if you get past that it works well.

I'd guess a lot of entry on the day people would use Revolut; just grab a nice Revolut name tag like "3ROC" and tell the competitor to send their fee to it. But I don't know how to get a Revolut account associated with an organisation, not a personal account - you'd have to get past all the know your customer stuff. Or use someone's personal Revolut account.

Fingal Orienteers opted for the low-end SumUp Air unit this summer as it was on a special offer.

It has worked very well but requires a dedicated phone (Treasurers?) with the SumUp App installed and a live Internet connection.

We use SumUp as a thin front-end and it is set-up to transfer our transactions once a week to our Bank of Ireland account by the use of IBAN.

There are no fixed costs for the use but a 1.69% transaction fee.
