LVO's Alan Elwood has asked me to pass this information on to you all - he is running the Cape Wrath Ultra in Scotland in May to raise money for two charities, Positive Steps Outdoors and Young Social Innovators. (Apologies if this is not the appropriate forum for an appeal like this but read on if you would like to help.)

Join the Three Amigos on their Epic Journey for Youth Mental Health and Social Innovation!

Many orienteers will know Alan Elwood of Lagan Valley Orienteers, and his son Andrew (who has run on the Irish international orienteering team at levels up to the Junior World Championships - Andrew's photo features on the OI website home page).

Alan (Founder and Director at Positive Steps Outdoors), along with Roger Warnock (CEO of Young Social Innovators) and Chris Ross (Partner at McKees Law), are teaming up as the Three Amigos to tackle the formidable Cape Wrath Ultra, a 400km, 8-day ultra running adventure through the Scottish Highlands, from 19th - 26th May. Starting at Fort William, the event finishes at Cape Wrath in the extreme north of Scotland.

Alan says “This isn't just about conquering a challenging trail; it's about making a real difference in the lives of young people across the island of Ireland. We're on a mission to raise vital funds to support programmes that promote positive mental health and social innovation among our youth.”

The three runners are hoping that orienteers and outdoor people all over Ireland will support them in this challenge. Those of us who love the outdoors know the benefits that outdoor activity bring to both physical and mental wellbeing and Positive Steps Outdoors aims to bring people who are dealing with personal difficulties into the natural environment to help them deal with the challenges they face in their lives. The funds raised will be shared between PSO and Young Social Innovators which run projects supporting social justice.

As President Michael D. Higgins, Patron of YSI, says At the heart of the Young Social Innovators programme is the development of active, creative citizens. And it is active, creative citizens who will lead the transformation of Ireland.”
