Outside of orienteering I believe he was an architect, mountaineer, long-distance walker and I imagine plenty more. I thoroughly enjoyed his book 'A Long Walk South' a few years ago.

He played a major part in the establishment and development of orienteering in Ireland in the 1960's and '70's, produced some of our earliest O-maps and, as his son Eoin said, was instrumental in setting up the original Irish O-club, Irish Orienteers, and the national governing body, as well as contributing to the establishment of the Association for Adventure Sports and its national centre at Tiglin. Three stalwarts of Irish orienteering - Joss Lynam, Liam Convery and Seán have left us in recent years. May they rest in peace.
