It was announced today that Bernard Phelan (ex 3ROC) has been released from jail in Iran after 7 months. Many thanks to all Bernard's friends from orienteering and others who supported the petition to release him. It is difficult to quantify the effect of a petition but it was undoubtedly a show of support which was appreciated by Bernard's father and family.

Hello everyone,

I would firstly like to apologise for not contacting you sooner, but since I returned home just over a year ago I have spent most of my time trying to get back to a normal life and spending time with family and friends.

Your support was invaluable. I was able to hear some of what was going on back in Ireland thanks to my political prisoner cellmates, whose families would tell them over the phone what they saw on opposition television channels and on social media.

It's impossible to thank you all individually, but there's may be an opportunity to meet some of you later this year. I have just completed a book about my time as a state hostage in Iran; "You will die in Prison". It is due to be launched in Dublin on Thursday the 3rd October, the 2nd anniversary to the day of my arrest in Mashhad in 2022.

Thank you again and all the best,

Bernard Phelan
