I have been trying to fill in some gaps in the records of the Leinster Championships, prompted by having access to the "Setanta Shield", the perpetual trophy given by Setanta Orienteers for the M21 class winner. Thanks to the people who provided information.
There are still some unknowns: the first is where the 1978 Leinster Champs was run. Having been back through the archives, I now think that the trophy was awarded to Wally Young on the basis of his winning the Leinster League series in 1978. This would correspond to my own recollection that the first actual Leinster Champs event was at Tiglin in 1979. Wally is recorded on the trophy as the 1978 (and 1980) winner. I still don't know who won in 1979.
Ballinderry (1981) was a forest near Rathdrum and it was a UCDO map but I don't know who ran the event that year. Any ideas?
There are some more blanks in the record, as not all the winners put their names on the trophy, and additionally, not all the names on the trophy have a club recorded.
In 2005 there were a lot of DNFs so it's not clear if there were any Leinster finishers and I don't know if DFO (Defence Forces Orienteers, a closed club) is a Leinster club or not. There were 7 finishers, the first 4 from outside Leinster and the last 3 were DFO, and 9 non-finishers in M21.
I have attached the winners' list (see link) so you can have a look at it.
