Older members of the orienteering community may remember Martin Mulligan, a founder member of UCD Orienteers. Martin, from Mullingar, passed away this week in Canada. He studied Biochemistry and after qualifying from UCD in 1976. He moved to North America and completed his PhD in Biochemistry at Harvard in 1984. Since 1988 he was attached to the Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's and retired as Professor of Biochemistry only last December.

He drew the first map of the Belfield campus, a black and white, 1:7500 scale map drawn with pen and ink on a large sheet of drafting film. Martin competed in orienteering all over Ireland while in college and took part in the 1976 JK in the Lake District, and in an early one-day Mourne Mountain Marathon. He ran with New England OC while at Harvard and was one of the Irish volunteers to help at the 1993 World Championships in upstate New York. He ran with St John's OC in Newfoundland and his last orienteering in Ireland was in the 2016 Leinster 3-Day as an M60.

May he rest in peace.
