The Junior World Orienteering Championships kicked off this morning with the sprint event around the streets of Scuol. Admist soaring temperatures and steep slopes, the Irish team delivered a solid team performance. Roisin\'s 46th place was the highlight, with Jonathan 71st, Paul 81st, Caoimhe 98th and Peter 101st. Home nation Switzerland took both gold medals.

JWOC continues tomorrow (Monday) with the long distance at Val Mustair, taking place at altitudes between 1700 and 2100m asl. There will be live results and gps tracking via the JWOC website.

The Irish juniors had good performances in the long distance race in the high Swiss mountains today. The main challenges were route choice, steep slopes and high altitude. Paul had a fantastic run and was very pleased to finish 83rd in the men\'s race, whilst Roisin and Caoimhe (84th and 90th) did well in the women\'s. Jonathan (134th) and Peter (146th) found the conditions tough. Aoife had a great start but unfortunately hurt her ankle badly on the slopes between 4 and 5 and had to abandon - wishing her a quick recovery. Joey Hadorn (Switzerland) and Anna Haataja (Finland) won the individual titles. The men\'s podium (positions 1-6) was exactly the same for the long as the sprint!
Tomorrow is a rest day and the next action is the middle qualification on Wednesday morning.

The Junior World Championships have continued over the past two days with the middle distance. Ftan hosted the qualifiers, with the 20 best in each of three heats progressing to the middle \'A\' final, the next 20 best to the \'B\' final and the remainder to the \'C\' final. Roisin and Jonathan had solid runs to qualify easily for the \'B\' final, and Paul was unlucky to run past one of his controls as his time would also have been fast enough for the \'B\'.
The finals were held this morning in Susch-Lavin amidst beautiful mountainous scenery. In contrast to the sprint final (where temperatures soared to 35 degrees), we awoke to temperatures of 6 degrees and snow. Roisin had another steady performance and was pleased to finish 24th in the B final. Jonathan was going well until he hit his knee, and jogged around the rest of the course to finish in 50th. Paul and Peter were happy with their runs in the C final. The Swiss winners of the A finals, Thomas Curiger and Simona Aebersold, were amongst the only orienteers to have clean runs today and had impressive victories for the home country.
