Sad news today that former IOA Chairman, Frank Martindale, has died. Frank was the founder of the club Tipperary Orienteers, which largely consisted of himself and his family, and produced several maps of forests in the Galtees and the Glen of Aherlow back in the 1970's and early '80's. He and Tipperary Orienteers were involved in running the Irish Championships at Ballyhourigan and Keeper Hill, with the Limerick club Thomond Orienteers, in 1983. He moved to the UK, where he ran with Southdowns Orienteers, and moved back to Ireland where he ran with 3ROC. His most recent major involvement was a controller of the Irish Sprint Championships in Waterford in 2016.
In addition to orienteering, Frank was a keen hillwalker, and he authored a well-regarded hillwalking guide to the south east of Ireland. He was a regular attendee at major competitions in the UK and Europe, including the JK, Scottish 6-Days and World Masters Championships.
His daughter, Julie (Cleary) and son in law Ronan are still very involved in the sport, this year as IOF Advisors for the World Masters O-Champs in Poland in August.
May he rest in peace.
