It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Brian Power who died in his sleep early this morning 5th Nov 2014
Arrangements: Removal from Our Lady\'s Hospice Mortuary, Harold\'s Cross on Friday evening to St. Colmcille\'s Church, Knocklyon, arriving at 5pm. Funeral Mass on Saturday at 10am followed by burial in Mount Venus Cemetery.
Brian was involved in orienteering in the early days of the sport in Ireland. He surveyed and drew the Kinnity map in 1974. Brian was one of the founding members of Setanta Orienteers in 1978 and has been involved in every single aspect of the clubs activities throughout its existence. Brian has been a long serving (suffering) member of the club committee and also served on both the Regional and National Associations. Brian was heavily involved in mapping and helped produce every club map and upgrade. Also, there was not a major event that Brian was not organising or planning, aiding and guiding, and always doing so in his own inimitable thorough manner. This continued to the 2014 Irish Orienteering Championships with Brian undertaking a pivotal role in the organising and was present at the computer during the 3 days. Brian enjoyed his orienteering and more so the company and social aspect of the sport. He had a great love of the outdoors in general and was often out walking in the hills with friends and colleagues. Upon his retirement a few short years ago he climbed Kilimanjaro which he thought easier than expected.
Whilst collecting controls after last year’s Rogaine, Brian felt unwell and was later diagnosed with myeloma, which is cancer of the bone marrow. He bore this with grace and dignity and fought it with optimism and good humour. He was last out with us at the weekend of our Club Champs, AGM and Leinster League event on 11th/12th October, where he was on his usual great form. It was only a few days after this that he took a turn for the worse and then sadly lost his battle. Brian has left us an enduring and lasting legacy along with memories of warmth and friendship.
Our sympathies go the Brian’s wife Jean, daughters Jennifer and Karen, son Aiden, daughter-in-law and grandson, his wider family and his many friends. May he Rest in Peace.
