Rathfarnham Chrimb-O

GEN Orienteering are pleased to invite you the inaugural Chrimb-O.

We hope that this pre-Christmas night orienteering event followed by a social get together can become an annual fixture.

Course Details

Street orienteering around the housing estates, parks and dark corners of Rathfarnham.

There are no major road crossings however participants need to be aware of traffic and pedestrians in the area.

Under 16s will need to be accompanied by an adult.

A headtorch is advised but you won't need a cranial floodlight typical of Night-O events.

Start will be open from 18.00 - 19.00

We are planning two courses  - approx course lengths.

  • Long - 4.4 km
  • Short - 3.8 km

Entries will stay open until Thursday, 8th December 23.00 - there will be very limited number of extra maps for entry on the night so please Pre-enter.

Directions

If you are travelling by car we recommend parking on Beaufort Downs - this is a residential area, please respect the residents and park responsibly.

The event is easily accessible on public transport, ideal if you coming for the social element of the evening.

Route to the start will be taped (250m) from Beaufort Downs.

@roryajax

Hi Rory

We're still planning to go ahead but will make a final call on it tomorrow afternoon.

Orienteering regularly takes place in conditions that are difficult underfoot and tomorrow evening will definitely be challenging.

I'd encourage everyone to wear footwear suitable for the conditions and use their judgement with regard to where they can run fast and where they need to be cautious.  The courses allow for quite a lot of running on grass but it will be impossible to completely avoid icy roads and footpaths.

It's non-competitive event and not worth risking live and limb for, that should be the approach of anyone who chooses to participate at their own risk.

If there is any change to the plan I'll post tomorrow before 3pm.

On another note

  • We are keeping it low key around the assembly and the start - unlike other GEN events there will be no hot drinks, treats or tent.
  • Registration/download and Bag storage will be in the Silver VW van - or the Yellow House if necessary!!!
  • Follow the red and white tape from Beaufort Downs to the start - 250m
  • SIAC will be enabled.

Hi All,

I'm just back in after a walk around the area with Mike Long.

Conditions have improved and while some of the ice has melted there is still snow and ice on the ground that will probably refreeze after dark.

Our view is that the event will go ahead but runners will need to be particularly careful when running on the paved areas and when transitioning from grass to paving.

Looking forward to see you all later

It looks like the gremlins have attacked our results file - I have the minions working hard trying to come up with a fix, in the meantime I've attached a photo of the results below.

Thanks to everyone who came out and braved the icy conditions.
