The next Leinster League event is the 3ROC competition on Sunday 8th October at Carlingford Mountain/Slieve Foy, in Co. Louth. Pre-entry is open until Thursday 5th October here.

The full range of League courses will be available, from Yellow and Orange (easy) through Light Green and Red (moderate) to Green (technically difficult), Blue and Brown (technically and physically difficult). Exact course details (length/climb) will be published shortly after final controlling.

There will be limited entry on the day but only on the Orange, Yellow, Light Green and Red courses. Green, Blue and Brown are pre-entry only.

Indicative course lengths/climb are:

Yellow 1.9 km/50 metres/10 controls

Orange 2.4 km/60 m/12 c

Light Green 3.2 km/85 m/15 c

Red 3.4 km/75 m/15 c

Green 3.7 km/230 m/14 c

Blue 5.5 km/250 m/13 c

Brown 7.2 km/350 m/14 c

Routes on two legs of the Yellow and Orange courses will have tapes to follow between the controls.

The area is the same as was used for the 2022 Leinster Championships, quite steep open mountain with much rock and contour detail but it is fairly runnable in most parts with short heather and grass. For safety reasons you must have a whistle and you may be told to wear a waterproof jacket if the weather conditions are poor.

Maps will be printed on waterproof paper; contactless SportIdent punching will not be enabled. Start times 11 am to 1 pm; courses close at 3 pm. Map scale 1:10000 with 5 metre contours for Brown and Blue; 1:7500 for the other courses.

Location map for access to parking: click here for map

We will be parking in the same field as at LOC22 and there will be a charge of €2 per car for parking. We expect to have portaloos at the event.

There will be a walk of about 700 metres with 125m climb to the start, across open hillside, so please arrive in time to start by 1 pm.

The courses are not suitable for buggies.

This is a sheep-farming area so no dogs are allowed.

The event will be signposted from The Bush on the R173 road towards Greenore and Carlingford, about 4 km beyond the village of Lordship.

A reminder that online entries to Sunday's Leinster League event on Carlingford Mountain (Slieve Foy) close on Thursday evening. This is the last Leinster League event for 6 weeks so don't miss the opportunity to run on one of the best areas in Ireland!

What a contrast to the 2022 Leinster Championships on the same area this time last year, when we had rain, wind and very poor visibility. We hope you enjoyed today's event. The results and Routegadget are now up on the OI Results page here. Please upload your routes so everyone can see the alternatives and can enjoy the competition again.

If you compare the 2022 and 2023 courses you will see that almost all the control sites were recycled from LOC22, with a different start and finish but with a selection of the control sites joined up in different ways. Even if you visited the controls last year, the conditions were such that you might as well have never been there.

Fans of open mountain orienteering should consider entering the Munster Championships near Inchigeela, Co. Cork on 22nd October. See details here.

Thanks to John, 3ROC and Shane for a stunning day out last Sunday! Beautiful views (I think anyway!), super map and great course.
