The Irish team of Dan Earnshaw, Emily Rowe, Eoghan Whelan and Liam Cotter start their JWOC races with the Sprint on Sunday at Baia Mare in Romania. They have had three days training and acclimatisation for the events, the Middle Distance on Wednesday, the Long on Friday and the Relay on Saturday. There is also a mixed sprint relay on Tuesday which requires two men and two women so they can’t have a competitive run in that.

Dan, Eoghan and Liam have run at JWOC before but it is Emily’s first.

The team leader is another former-JWOC runner, Aidan McCullough.

You can follow the event at www.jwoc2023.ro

Start times for Friday’s Long race at the Junior World Championships have been published. Emily Rowe starts at 08.55 Irish time (10.55 in Romania).
Dan Earnshaw starts at 09.16 Irish time (11.16 local time), Eoghan Whelan at 09.50 (11.50 in Romania) and Liam Cotter at 11.02 (13.02 local time).
Start times are spread over about 5 hours so late starters have to wait a long time in pre-start quarantine: quarantine starts as soon as the runners get on the buses from the accommodation (which could be as early as 06.55 am for them), so no mobile phones or external communication is allowed. Lots of crosswords, card games and snoozing!

The forecast for Friday is for temperatures of about 23C with thundery showers all day.

The W20 course is 7.8 km with 310 m climb and 17 controls and the M20 is 10.7 km with 585 m climb and 23 controls, so they are tough courses.

Once again, all the athletes will have GPS tracking so you can follow them live at www.jwoc2023.ro

Saturday’s Relays start at 9 am in Romania, 07.00 Irish time.
