Fingal Orienteers are proud to yet again push the boundaries of the province of Leinster by hosting a Leinster League event in Dartrey Forest, on the Cavan/Monaghan border, between Cootehill Co. Cavan and Rockcorry Co. Monaghan.  Dartrey Forest was formerly the estate of the Dawson family but is now managed by Coillte.  The area is typical Drumlin hill terrain with the classic teardrop shaped hills. Most of the forest on the drumlin hills is runnable coniferous forest. There are also some sections of mature oak and beech woods.  The forest is mainly runnable and there are very few brambles.  It was last used for orienteering in the late 1980s.

Parking & Directions
Parking, registration and download will be in the car park of Rockcorry National School, H18 FD93, located to the west of the village of Rockcorry on the R188.  The school is adjacent to the forest entrance: orienteers will park in the school yard and walk to the forest, where the start and finish are located.  A Portaloo will be provided near the forest entrance.  Orienteers will pass the finish on their way to the start and can leave clothing at the finish if they wish.  The event will be signposted from Rockcorry and Cootehill.  If using a sat nav to find your way to the school, use the Eircode.  Do not use the location for Rockcorry National School that is shown on Google Maps.  It is incorrect and is the location of the old school, the "new" school being a mere 15 years old.

Provisional Course information
Course Length Climb
Yellow 2.0 Km 10 m
Orange 3.1 25 m
Red 4.4 45 m
Light Green 3.8 50 m
Green 4.9 115 m
Blue 6.9 170 m
Brown 9.5 225 m

All courses will be printed on waterproof A4 paper.   All courses will be on a scale of 1:10000, with the exception of the Brown course, which will be at 1:15000. Control descriptions will be printed on the map and loose descriptions will also be available.  Please enter online via Orienteering Ireland's online entry system.  A small number of entries on the day can be facilitated, but with an additional cost of €4 and we cannot guarantee map availability if you turn up on the day.

Courses close: 14:45

Please note the earlier course closing time: this is to facilitate control collection before darkness falls.

Timing:
SportIdent will be used but controls will not be SI Air enabled.

Fingal Orienteers would like to thank the Principal, Board of Management, staff and students of Rockcorry National School for the use of the car park.

Importnant: additional information for Dartrey Forest:

Please enter online. Closing at 23.00 Friday 18th.  There will be entry on the day available but will have an extra charge.

Control Descriptions will be available at registration. They are also on the map and can be downloaded from the Fingal website.

Note that most drainage ditches and extraction rides are not mapped as there are too many of them.
On the Brown course a bridge that has to be crossed and the road leading to it may be flooded, but is only ankle deep.

The Yellow course is not suitable for buggies.

Regards,

I had to create a 2nd account as I could not view the forum with my first one.

Thank You Fingal, Well planned, well organised and the weather was kind.

I never want to use a 1:15000 O map again and I should be grateful to have had the opportunity so I know for the future 🧐 🙂

Thanks Angus.  There was a request a few years ago from the elites for more 1:15000 maps because that's what they run on at major events. But then none of them turned up at Cootehill!  Sad really, but the regular attendees are all getting older.
