The first event in the 2018 "Dublin by Night" orienteering series is this Saturday, 13th January, in the Phoenix Park. The format is the same as in previous years, with two courses.

The courses will be about 7 km and 3.5 km. Pre-marked maps on waterproof paper, SportIdent timing, hot drinks, light and shelter - what are you waiting for?

This year we will have a mass-start for everyone at 6.45 pm or as close to that as we can get, so please arrive and register in good time. This is a change from the previously published information.

The courses will be gaffled (forked, so that you run loops in a different sequence).

Start and parking are at and adjacent to the Garda Sports Grounds, across the main road from the Polo Grounds. See map here.

For insurance reasons, night orienteering is only open to age classes M/W16 and above.

We'll have tea and biscuits afterwards.

I'm not fond of mass starts, but thats just me. I'm confused enough at night, the last thing I need is several other runners flying away beside me 🙂

In related questioning however - does anyone have the full list of DbN events for 2018? I only see three on the fixtures list, and theres a guy in work looking for some rota cover on Sat the 11th....

Hi Dave,

The intended schedule of events is:

DBN1  13/01/18  Phoenix Park (3ROC)
DBN2  20/01/18  Ballyward (SET)
DBN3  27/01/18  Killiney Hill (GEN)
DBN4  03/02/18  Bushy Park (AJax)
DBN5  10/02/18  Location? (CNOC)

I have not heard back from CNOC so that is the only event whose status I have no information on. All the other events are confirmed and going ahead. GEN are in the process of registering their event.

Could someone relevant from CNOC contact me directly about their event (not via the forum please)?

since you have already planned some loops which are run in different sequences, which I think are called Phi loops (?), then it would be ideal for a mass start. I vote yes.

If we're having a mass start, it should of course be at the Papal Cross...

We have a CNOC meeting this Friday, so hopefully the details will be decided then (if not already sorted out) - I'll ask for someone to chat to you!

A mass start would make for a more sociable event, so it's a yes from me

Not sure if I can make the event but am always in favour of mass starts (even without forking/gaffling) - the distraction adds to the fun! In the rare instances that someone follows they generally improve the followee's run and get dropped somewhere en route...

Is the mass start compulsory? Is there an option to go out earlier or later with a punching start? What time do courses close as some like to start duirng early part of start window to have enough time to finish before closes close.

Courses will close 8.15 pm. Last start for anyone who may miss the mass start is 7 pm. If you'd like to run earlier for some compelling reason, that's OK as long as we're ready to go, but it will be busy from 6 pm with registration etc in anticipation of the start at 6.45, so we may not be in a position to start anyone before 6.30, in which case maybe people could wait for the 6.45 start.

Super event John. Excellent planning - I hope it becomes a permanent fixture. The common first control after the mass start worked really well - a stroke of genius.
