And yet they are able to print full-colour maps? In any event there is no reason why there can't be a standard for B&W and Colour control descriptions, especially to cater for people for whom colour blindness is an issue.

In our case the maps are professionally printed and descriptions printed at home with black only laser on unused maps from previous event. If descriptions were colour then this would add to the cost as its pushing more of the printing in a professional direction.
In my opinion there is very little broken with our current symbol set-up, so there isn't any major fix needed.

The biggest issue with colour descriptions from the IOF perspective is how maps are supposed to be printed. That is, using offset colour printing, with the control descriptions printed on the map in the last pass of purple overprint. Now, no one in Ireland uses offset printing anyway, but that's a whole different kettle of fish. In principle I like the idea of colour control descriptions but I'm not sure it's necessary. Having two different symbol sets, one for B&W and one for colour would not be ideal as it would increase the work and knowledge necessary for planners.

I wil definitely put a comment in to the effect that the out of bounds symbol is silly. Whatever about how complicated it is, the character of the symbol it totally different from everything else. I agree with Martin that using a flower symbol specifically is strange as there are many variation on what the actualy ground could be in an OOB area.

Thanks for the discussion and input!

Can I just say that the control description symbol should be the same as or as close as possible to the symbol on the map. I know it is not always possible but it seems silly having one symbol on the map and a totally different one on the descriptions.
