Post Junior Squad fundraiser Leinster Champs weekend Massys Sprint with Si-air

Saturday pm 8th April (Saturday of the Leinster Champs) a Junior Squad fundraiser will be run in Massy's Estate south Dublin. This will be a forest sprint ISSOM map (probably 1:4000) event and will be Si-air enabled. This I believe will be the first IOA Si-air enabled event. Northern Ireland Orienteering Association are lending SIACs for the event so there'll be enough to go around. Being one week before the JK which is SI-air enabled for all days, this will be great opportunity to try out this system. The usual punching will also work.

Setanta Orienteeers are covering all the costs (mainly permit and maps) for the event, so that ALL monies taken on day goes to junior squad. Please support this event if possible.

More details much nearer the time.

Some more detail,
Planned start window 3-4pm
2 courses on offer planned by junior squad member Zoë Tyner
2.7km (shotest distance) 75m climb 22 controls
1.8km (shortest distance) 20m climb 18 controls
The shorter course is technically easier and is suitable for beginners.
SIAC contactless punching available, first IOA event to offer this and good practice for the JK the following week.

The finish is 70m downhill of the start so not to tire you for the Leinster Champs the following day! (any other day and there would have been a nice uphill finish!)

Event parking will be on forest road through the top of the Hellfire Carpark.

I'm trying to publish final info tonight, but in meantime I've a call for helpers as I've very few commited to help at moment. There are a couple of traffic management roles (entry to car park and barrier at top of carpark which orienteers will drive through) which are essential, one of them from 14.30 to 17.30, ideally 3 shifts of one hour each and another from 14.30 to 16.30, 2 shifts of one hour. If I can get these roles filled the rest of the event will near enough fall into place.

if you can assist in any way, drop an email to angus at mothsireland dot com

A related thread has been started, informing of proposal for siginificant development for Hellfire and Massy's Estate.
http://www.orienteering.ie/forums?mingleforumaction=viewtopic&t=729.0#postid-2168

Anyone attending tomorrow will not fail to see and will have opportunity to interact with the Hell No! campaign.

Another note for tomorrow, please bring your usual SI number as this will dramatically speed up entering your details in the computer for anyone in the IOA SI archive which is most of the regular orienteers.

Now the important stuff. €661 was raised. Thanks to all who supported the event. Helpers, perhaps too many to name but here goes, Donal, Mick, Debbie, Mike, Mary, Clodagh, Eoghan, Ruth. Special shout to Sonja, who put out controls, stayed at registration throughout and collected controls and packed up. She will be going back to her native Switzerland in June, but she contributed a lot today, so if you see her at LOC tomorrow or IOC, be sure to thank her. Sincere apologies to anyone I haven't credited.

Sprint events often raise controversy and this was no exception and this could have been avoided had I been proactive in pointing out that the river was forbidden to cross. I've had a full on couple weeks and it was inevitable that some issue will slip through and this was it. Those who owned up to crossing the river not using marked bridges have been disqualified but I can see from the splits that there were others.
It was a fun event, I think all enjoyed Zoë's planning, it was a glorious day and we all had fun, but we can also use it to educate ourselves about some of the specifics of sprint maps in particular the forbidden to cross features.

If you are looking at the experienced course on route gadget, there was a map exchange at control 13 so we got away with routing the course back on itself.

And finally, I was wildly optimistic with 14 minutes, 15 minutes should have been achieveable though...Kev

On behalf of the junior squad many thanks to Angus, Zoe and all who helped yesterday. Great day out at Masseys.
The funds raised will be used for a training camp to be held abroad and which will be open to all juniors not just the ones who run in the teams at EYOC, JWOC etc.
Any ideas for a location for such a camp are welcome. Possibilites where we have contacts would be Sweden, Norway, France and the UK. All ideas welcome. Personally I would love somewhere with a bit of sun!
Again thanks to all.

Angus, Sonja & co - thanks for a great event. loved the map and interpreting the wall 'crossings'!
Also first time for my two to get around a course on their own. they're now very enthusiastic!
