Hello

Im hoping to bring my 2 boys (10 & 12 yrs) to try orienteering. They enjoy walks in the woods that we sometimes do as a family. Is "Glendoo Ridge East" a good place to start? We live in Knocklyon. They haven't any map-reading experience to speak of. Could they go on their own or need an adult (the older one will probably want to go on his own without little brother!).

Any advice appreciatd.

Susan

Hi Susan,

The Glendoo event is a good place to start.  It would probably be best if the boys were accompanied by an adult for their first time orienteering.  The Yellow course is the shortest course, and is 1.5 km in length.  On this course all control points are withn 50 m of a path, fence or stream.

If you mention to one of the organisers that you are beginners you will be shown how to orient a map, and be given basic instruction on navigation.

regards,

Susan,

Since your boys are at the 'just trying' stage I would certainly recommend that they be accompanyied at 'Glendoo Ridge'. Ideally they should have some experience orienteering in a park or small forest first. But if you want to try it, do a 'Yellow course' together. Looking at upcoming events try the December 7th event in DCU, and Dec 26th on Ticknock. They are good events to begin with.

Have a look at our FAQ for Beginners and at the full list of Fixtures.

Enjoy

Aine
