Post Missing points on Ticknock Permanent beginners course.

Hi.

I am new to orinteering but am trying to convince my team at work that it would be a good thing to do as a team activity. So last weekend, I visited ticknock hill (the beginner course) to check it out for myself and noticed that the first point on the map didnt seem to have any stake with the Orinteering symbol on it. There was a stake which seemed to have a piece of paper protected by a plastic sleeve which was attached with a thumbtack but no actual symbol on it. All of the other points 2-6, I could find (and they had the same number that was on the answer sheet).

However, when I went back on sunday, it seems like the second point had been removed too. Couldnt find it anywhere and I am 99.9% certain that I looked all over the same place where I saw it only the day before..

Click here for a copy of the course I'm referring to.

There's probably not many people on this forum who know anything about this beginner course but if anyone has any ideas about what happened or knows who might be responsible for maintaining the course. Dont really want to bring a big gang up there and start off by telling them that the first two points on the map cannot be found:).

Thanks
-t

Thanks for pointing that out, Tommy. Vandalism can be a problem with permanent courses. We'll check the posts out. There is one other missing post that we heard about recently, plus one that seems to have been moved by Coillte or somebody. John McCullough 3ROC (http://www.3roc.net)

Hi - It's clearly been a while since I put up this post!. And it's also been a while since I have been up at ticknock. I was just wondering if anyone here knows if the permanant orienteering course posts are back in place at ticknock? Im hoping to bring my work team up there this week for a group activity and I think some may find getting around the begineers course tough enough even with everything in place so if posts are still missing, I'll have to work around that.
If anyone has been up at ticknock recently and knows the state of the course, please let me know.

Thanks
-Tommy

Managed to get up to ticknock yesterday and confirm that post 1 of the beginners course is still missing.
I couldnt find post 2 either but I may have been looking in the wrong place.

Well, little has changed, unfortunately. Coillte are reportedly doing an audit of all the permanent orienteering courses to see what condition they are in. There is still lack of clarity about who is responsible for maintaining the courses: Coillte funded their construction and provided the materials and manpower, and host the downladable maps on the Coillte Outdoors web site; the orienteering clubs simply ensured that the posts were put in the right place. Another issue is the updating of the maps to reflect changes in the forest.
Some of the missing posts are due to vandalism but I think some are due to damage by forestry activity.
3ROC put a note on the club website (http://www.3roc.net/index.php/events/) to warn intending users of the courses about the missing posts. The main difficulty with the Ticknock course is that it's the first few posts which are missing, so people may give up: if one did the course in reverse you would maybe have enough confidence to know that the posts were missing.
We have contacted Coillte again to see what they propose to do. They have recently extended the MTB trails on Ticknock and this would have cost a lot more than replacing a few wooden posts to restore the POC.
POC's are a potentially great way to let people try basic orienteering so this situation is far from satisfactory, but Ticknock is not the only casualty: for example, Hellfire Woods have had sections closed off because of storm damage and felling; Marlay Park (SDCC) no longer seems to have a POC at all.

So, for Tommy, if you contact 3roc@orienteering.ie we'll see if we can help you in some way.

Situation on Hellfire is worse with half the posts gone and many of the ones left are overgrown! Massy's is a bit better but there is the issue of missing posts affecting all 3 courses, in addition to out of date map.

I've just fired off an email to Dublin mountains partnership end of Coillte. Please share if you find a point of contact that will deal with updating and maintaining the POCs
